Near Field Communication (NFC)

Definition

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short range wireless RFID technology that makes use of interacting electromagnetic radio fields instead of the direct radio transmissions used by technologies such as Bluetooth. Once an NFC chip is activated by another chip, small amounts of data between the two devices can be transferred when held within close proximity of each other. NFC is often used in contactless payment services such as Apple Pay.
